Job Description:
- Location: Primarily onsite and field-based.
- Travel: Local driving required to substations and project sites.
- We are seeking a Test Engineer I to join the Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services – Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) team.
- This position is ideal for an early-career Electrical Engineer with an interest in power systems, substation automation, SCADA, and industrial controls.
- The Test Engineer will support the commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of substation integration and automation equipment while ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Commission, test, troubleshoot, and maintain substation integration and SCADA equipment.
- Support Protection & Control field projects from planning through completion.
- Perform testing and verification of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), protective relays, and automation equipment.
- Assist with troubleshooting communication networks and substation automation systems.
- Perform electrical measurements, system testing, and power system calculations.
- Utilize engineering tools and software to communicate with microprocessor-based devices.
- Work safely in electrical substation environments while following all safety procedures and standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and project teams to successfully complete field assignments.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university (Electrical Engineering preferred).
- 0–5 years of related engineering experience.
- Willingness to work primarily onsite and in the field.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to substations and project sites.
Preferred Experience:
- Commissioning and testing substation SCADA equipment.
- Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and microprocessor-based relay technology.
- Serial and Ethernet network communications.
- Substation relay protection and control systems.
- Industrial Control Systems (ICS), including PLCs, power generation controls, or industrial automation.
- Power system calculations and electrical measurements.
- AC and DC electrical systems.
Desired Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of substation safety practices and industrial electrical environments.
- Understanding of SCADA systems and control schemes.
- Familiarity with serial and Ethernet communication protocols.
- Knowledge of three-phase power calculations and measurements.
- Ability to communicate with microprocessor-based devices using engineering software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and other computer productivity tools.
- Experience using multimeters, hand tools, and electrical testing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Work Environment:
- Primarily field-based with regular work in electrical substations.
- Local driving between job sites is required.
- PPE is required while working in substations and other electrical environments.
- Candidates must be comfortable working in outdoor and industrial settings while following all safety procedures.
- This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Electrical Engineering graduate or early-career engineer looking to build hands-on experience with utility power systems, substation automation, SCADA, protective relays, and industrial control systems in a field engineering environment.
